THE ORCHESTRA
The “Estudiantina Mandolinistic Orchestra” a very special plectrum orchestra, was founded in Voghera in November 1947. It can be consider one of the most long-lived and deserving orchestral reality in the musical outline of the city. The “Estudiantina” can be placed within the Vogherese mandolinistic tradition together with other old groups which date back to the19th Century. During the decades it reached the considerable number of more than forty members in its staff. Today it can rely on eighteen musicians in the permanent staff (the number could be enlarged, by external professional musicians when required by the performances) who can be shaped in quartet or octet according to the request. This can happen thanks to the musicians’ high versatility. The eighteen musicians can be divided into the following sections:leading mandolins, second mandolins, mandolas, mandoloncelli, guitars and double bass.
The “Estudiantina”’s repertory has undergone a substantial transformation during the years passing from melodrama and classical music to ethnic sounds. The musical research is now been adressed to realities belonging to the Mediterranean cultures. Such a choice has been adopted in order to give the listener pleasing emotional and spiritual sensations, thanks to only seemingly for harmony and sonority. At the same time these new sonorities should give the audience the opportunity to search into themselves. The etnic passages of the new repertory come from compelling researches and from a long and hard work of arrangement and adaptation of the scores to the single instruments of the four sections.
